SOFIA (Bulgaria), January 24 (SeeNews) – The volume of cargo carried by BDZ Tovarni Prevozi, the freight transport unit of Bulgarian state-run rail carrier BDZ, dropped by 9.0% in 2013, the parent company said on Friday.
Earlier this month Bulgaria's transport ministry said that last year BDZ Tovarni Prevozi carried 1.0 million tonnes of cargo less than in 2012, as for 2014 it expects an increase by 1.5 million tonnes.
In the last four months of the year cargo volumes grew by an average 30% a month, BDZ told SeeNews in an email. The increase was the result of a recovery programme launched in September, it added. In the eight months through August BDZ Tovarni Prevozi’s cargo volume was 17% down year-on-year.
According to the transport ministry, the volume of cargo transported by the company in the January-August period was 13 million tonnes less than a year earlier.
