The Bulgarian National Railways (BDZ) has been carrying passangers and goods without a license since July 9, the website of the Railway Administration Executive Agency informs.

The licenses of BDZ Passenger Services and BDZ Freight Services, issued for 5 years on July 10 2008, indeed expired in the beginning of July 2013, Railway Administration Executive Agency head Veselin Vasilev confirmed to Standart.

The documents are in the process of re-licensing, Vassilev informed adding that the two companies should not have a problem to transport passengers and cargo as they have valid safety certificates that expire at the end of the year.

However, according to lawyers, this contradicts the current Railway Transport Act, under which safety certificates are issued only to licensed railway operators. This means that the lack of licenses cancel also the safety certificates of BDZ Passenger Services and BDZ Freight Services.

The two companies have already applied for changes in the legislation.
